TOEIC has two tests, one of them evaluates the receptive English skills (reading and listening comprehension) and the other evaluates the productive skills (speaking and writing). The students can choose to take both exams or only one of them according to their needs. The structure of each test is different, as well as their marks, which are detailed as follows.
TOEIC oral and written
It is done through a computer. This TOEIC version does not involve an examiner, the student records and writes his / her answers according to the section that corresponds in the exam. In the same way as the last exam, the oral and written components receive equal weighting. The final score of this exam goes from 0 to 400 marks.
IELTS

IELTS ACADEMIC TEST
The IELTS academic test is one of the two IELTS versions, and this is the most popular one. It is for students who want to go to a university from The United Kingdom, but there are many universities from other countries that accept academic IELTS results as an English level certification. IELTS Academic scores can also be used to demonstrate English proficiency for visa and immigration purposes in the UK and other countries.
Test Structure
The IELTS Academic test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes in total, and it evaluates four skills: Reading, writing, oral comprehension and expression. The written IELTS academic parts are different from the IELTS General Training test, its topics are mostly related to academic and university environments. The oral parts of both tests are completely equal and deal with daily situations.
IELTS GENERAL TEST
It is one of the two IELTS versions, and it is less popular than the other one. It is aimed at people who want to get the visa for the UK and other countries that demand English knowledge. The IELTS Academic Test can also be used for this purpose. The IELTS General Test is not valid as an English certification for most universities and schools. Students are required to take the IELTS Academic test, or another one which is academically oriented.
Tests structure
The IELTS General Test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes in total, and evaluates four skills: Reading, writing, oral comprehension and expression. The written IELTS General Test is different from the Academic IELTS. The IELTS General test is more focused on daily topics and labor situations. The oral part of both tests are equal and do not include academic topics.
TOEFL
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized English academic test mainly done by students who want to go to American universities. Some universities from other countries also accept TOEFL as an English level certification. TOEFL is a set of tests, from which the most popular one is TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials exam.
TOEFL involves four sections: Reading, oral comprehension, oral expression and written expression. TOEFL is a long and hard test (more than 3 hours) designed to evaluate if the students are prepared to study at an English speaking university. Many students spend from 3 to 6 months preparing for TOEFL before taking this test.
TOEFL Essentials exam is thought to be easier and cheaper with a less academic scope.
The obtained score in this exam is valid for 2 years.
TOEFL IBT
The TOEFL Ibt is a 4,5 hour – English test that evaluates Reading, oral comprehension, oral expression and written expression, all of them have academic context. As this exam is mainly done by students who want to go to universities from The USA or other English speaking countries, this test is focused on academic English.
The TOEFL iBT goes from 0 to 120 marks, with the same weight in each one of the four evaluated skills. The required score in the TOEFL iBT varies according to the university, and some of them can demand specific scores in some of the assessed skills. Its score is valid for 2 years from the date of the test.
TOEFL ESSENTIALS
TOEFL Essentials is a 1.5-hour online adaptive English test that evaluates oral comprehension, reading, writing and speaking on academic and general knowledge topics. This version of the TOEFL was designed as a cheaper and more accessible alternative to the TOEFL iBT. It is important to check the version of TOEFL before taking the test to be admitted to the university of your choice, since not all universities accept the TOEFL Essentials.
TOEFL Essentials is scored from 1 to 12, with equal scores for all four areas tested. The TOEFL score varies depending on the University, and not all of them accept the TOEFL Essentials. Some educational institutions may require scores in specific areas of the test, for example reading comprehension and written expression, so it is best to verify this information with the chosen university. Any TOEFL test is valid for 2 years after you take it. The TOEFL Essentials report includes the most recent test scores and the highest score for all tests taken in the last two years.
